Nigerian Shawarma has its own style of preparation. Nigerians always employ their own mothods of preparing foreign foods actually lol. This snack has become a very popular meal in all areas of Nigeria and hostel or recreational spots.
Getting it in eateries can be quite stressful, so WIZIMATIC has decided to make this post available for those who would love to prepare their own Nigerian- style chicken shawarma at home.
INGREDIENTS FOR NIGERIAN CHICKEN SHAWARMA
This makes about 6+ big Shawarma wraps
1) Chicken breasts (Boneless)
2) Chicken laps/Thigh (Boneless)
3) Shawarma bread (Either Flour tortilla wraps or pita bread
4) 1 large cucumber (Cut into thin strips and Circles)
5) 2 Big tomatoes (Cut into thin strips
6) 1 medium sized onions (Cut into thin strips)
9) 1 tablespoon Vegetable Oil
FOR THE MARINADE;
1) 1 teaspoon thyme
2) 2 teaspoon curry
3) 1 teaspoon Onion powder
4) 1 teaspon garlic powder
5) 1 large chicken stock cube
6) Half a teaspoon black pepper
7) Chilli pepper to taste
8) Salt to taste (OPTIONAL)
9) 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Wash and cut the vegetables into thin strip ( if you havent done that yet ) and set aside
Also cut the chicken or beef into thin strip and set aside.
TIP : I always recommend, using a combination of chicken thigh & breast because the fats from the thighs add special flavor and compliments the taste of the chicken breast
Place the chicken strip into a bowl, add the marinade and mix thoroughly until well incorporated. Then cover and store in the fridge for 2 to 24 hours (depending all how much time you have)
TIP: I actually don’t wait 24 hours, I just store overnight or 2-3 hours, but i realized the longer the meat marinades, the better it tastes.
In a pan, heat up the tablespoonful of oil, add the marinated chicken/beef & stir fry until juicy and brown. Scoop unto a plate and set aside.
Mix some mayonnaise and ketchup together (mayo-ketch spread)
Place a shawarma bread on a clean flat surface and cut into two equal sizes (thats if you are using a large pita bread)
But if using a very flat bread or tortilla wraps, simply spread the mayo-ketch on it and then fill it with the sliced vegetables on one end and sprinkle some chilli pepper(optional)
Then fold the bread, tuck the edge and roll to form a shawarma wrap….
TIP: If you want to warm it up a bit, place on a heated pan for 3 mins ( the closed edge facing the pan). If you have a microwave or sandwich maker, feel free to use those too.
And your homemade Nigerian Chicken Shawarma is ready to Enjoy!!!
QUICK NOTE: There are several bread used for making shawarma which includes Pita bread, Naan Bread, flour tortillar wraps and a lot more.
Also tastes great in sliced bread and our local oshodi bread lol
